This is the Crucifixius section of the Nicene Creed, but it stops at "passus et sepultus est" (he suffered and was buried). Huge loss, culturally, for the Catholic Church to have given up Latin.

In fact, I'm listening to this video clip earnestly over and over since the Eve of Christmas last month, to be albe to sing "Selig sind die Toten" in Bass part. Thanks to The Cambridge Singers, this tune is now engraved entirely in my mind, and I hope I'll be able to sing the Bass part flawlessly in the first practice in the choir I attend due on next Sunday.

One of the very greatest choral pieces of the Baroque.

The contrast between the mournful and the comforting and optimistic verses is amazing. After an already impressive harmonic build-up, the chord at 3:27 (on "-beit" in the 2nd sopr.) is one of the most beautiful and unexpected I ever heard in music.

It's interesting to hear Price performing this aria that I always associate with Freni from the recording with Price as Carmen.

Blessed are the deceased who die in the name of the Lord. From henceforth the Holy Spirit saith: They are at peace from their labour. Their works are their legacy. Something like that anyway. So beautifully Saxon like my favourite girlfriend!

Revelation 14 13. And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Write, Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them. 13. To God Alone Be All The Glory. Hallelujah. Amen.

Was in choir for 9 years this piece is the ONLY one where after the last note and our director turned, there was silence from the crowd and crying in the front row. Afterwards, the dirextor explained the lyrics and what they meant and a lady left the hall sobbing.

@@Claude_vanWe who know what the lyrics mean are in a minority. If we dwell deeply on the words we know that these proclaim the moment when Our Lord redeemed us. "He was crucified under Pontius Pilate, suffered, died, and was buried."
